Me with Jimmy Carnahan, a
former city editor at the Nashville Tennessean,
where I--as well as Diane Massey--worked as a reporter
after finishing college. |

12th

bar. It's here during the 1980s that I first heard Nashville
singer-writer Pat
McLaughlin sing his song "In the Mood." |

Main Street in Northampton, Massachusetts, my inspiration
for the fictional town of Merritt, where Callie and
her daughter Anna live. Northampton is also the subject
of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder's book
Home Town, which provided me with valuable background
material.

Smith College in Northampton. The campus of Smith,
a prestigious womens' college, was in my mind when I
wrote about fictional Windham College, Callie's alma
mater and employer. Like Callie, I also retired to the
school library basement when I needed to get work done.

Northampton viewed from Mt. Holyoke, where Callie,
Rick and Anna go hiking. When they look down from this
same spot, they look down on fictional Merritt.

The island of North Haven
viewed from the ferry. North Haven was the inspiration
for fictional Blue Peek Island. The large house to the
left was in my mind when I wrote about Diane Massey's
family summer house. |

My blue Subaru--remarkably similar to Callie's--waiting
in line for the ferry to North Haven. In the background
the stone building with two chimneys is the real
Old
